You Are My Sunshine
Johanna Mason x Fem!Reader
warnings: slightly hinted ADHD coded reader, ooc Peeta(?)
word count: 661 (sorry it's short i had a hard time figuring out where to go with it)
---
the pure smile on your face is inerasable as you follow behind your girlfriend, your hand interlocked with hers as you both leave the training center.
"Johanna! hey!" a voice calls out, breaking the tranquil silence that had surrounded the two of you. Johanna turns around, your hand slipping from hers as you both pivot to face the source of the voice.
a short blonde boy approaches the both of you, with a slightly taller dark-haired girl trailing not too far behind him. you recognize them as Katniss and Peeta from last yearâs games.
Johanna raises an eyebrow at the pair, her gaze primarily fixed on the boy. "what do you want?" she asks, her voice laced with a hint of skepticism as she crosses her arms over her chest.
the blondeâs cheeks turn a subtle shade of pink as he stammers, "just wanted to talk about being allies." the statement leaves his mouth as though it was the most obvious thing in the world. "you seemed pretty fond of the idea yesterday-" his voice trails off as his gaze shifts to the other woman, who is now squinting at him.
your chuckle escapes you at the sight of her expression, drawing all eyes onto you. as you notice their stares, a blush tints your cheeks. "hi.." you mumble, your eyes flitting up to meet Johannaâs.
âyou want to be allies with us?â Johanna redirects the attention back onto her, and you, overwhelmed by the sudden attention, bounce on the balls of your feet, your eyes darting around the hallway as you look for something else to focus on.
âus?â Katniss questions, her eyebrow raised.
Johanna lets out a frustrated groan, "us." she motions between you and her. but you remain distracted, your attention diverted as you watch Finnick and Mags leave the training room. "y/n." Johanna interrupts your thoughts, placing her hand on your shoulder and pulling your attention back to her.
you turn your head to look at her, a playful smile dancing on your lips. "hmm?"
Johanna chuckles at your reaction, following your gaze over to where you were previously staring. "go," she instructs, motioning for you to leave.
Katniss furrows her eyebrows as Johanna shoos you away.
âthank you, babyy,â you drawl out, leaning up to press a gentle peck to her lips before darting off towards your best friend.
Peeta is left staring at Johanna, his mouth slightly agape.
Johanna turns back to the two of them, irritation painting her features. âwhat?â she snaps.
ânothing!â Peeta quickly defends, his hands raised in surrender as he locks eyes with the taller woman.
rolling her eyes, Johanna lets out a groan, pinching the bridge of her nose in frustration. âyeah, we can be allies.â she finally concedes, crossing her arms as she once again meets their gaze.
Johanna, caught in the middle of an uncomfortable silence, carefully scrutinizes the two figures standing before her. neither Peeta nor Katniss utters a single word, a thick tension hanging in the air between them. she narrows her eyes slightly, pursing her lips in an obvious sign of annoyance.
after what feels like an eternity, she finally releases a heavy sigh, her voice dripping with sarcastic humor as she says, "well, this has been a great talk. enlightening, really." she adds an exaggerated raise of her eyebrows for good measure. "now, if you'll excuse me," she continues, her tone shifting to something more sincere, "i need to catch up with my girlfriend." without giving them the chance to respond, she swiftly walks past them, her boots clicking against the hard floor as she heads in your direction.Â
you, meanwhile, are standing a little way off, engaged in an animated conversation with Finnick. the sight of her approaching brings a smile to your face, a stark contrast to the slightly dumbfounded expressions she leaves behind on the faces of Peeta and Katniss, who are still standing in the hallway, processing the interaction.

Jabberjays | Johanna Mason
Pairing: Johanna Mason x fem!reader (District4!Finnick's sister!reader)
Summary: During the attack of the Jabberjays Katniss is introduced to a whole different Johanna.
Warning/s: a bit of angst, a bit of fluff, the quarter quell, jabberjays, panic, screaming, weapons, you know typical hunger games stuff, also this is more like a short blurb but yeah, possible grammar and spelling mistakes
Author's note: I always wanted to write something about the Jabberjay attack so I absolutely loved the request! Also I made the reader Finnick's sister, I hope that's okay. Hope you enjoy!!
Request -> hi! i have a request for johanna!! could u do one where fem!reader and her are in a relationship thatâs not secret just private (like only finnick knows) but something happens in the arena where johanna gets worried about r & finnick and katniss have a talk like johanna and katniss did in the movie abt annie? sry if that was too long or didnât make sense! ty <33
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/fd3bb0f231b6bed13bec33acd2d74b3a/ec3c352c29c47c8a-41/s540x810/7d596100149ca9c1f780a08fc718f8541f248f28.jpg)
Johanna just went into the thick forest to get some water with the spile that Haymitch send them so that they don't die of dehydration. She was regretting it now.
Katniss, Peeta, Beetee, your brother Finnick and you were on the beach. You were sitting with Katniss on the dry sand as you anxiously waited for Johanna to return from the forest as you stated at the hole in the sand that Johanna's ax made.
Thankfully, you thought to yourself, she took it with her.
Everything was relatively peaceful, too peaceful even. You didn't like it one bit. Something was coming. The game makers wouldn't allow the things to be so peaceful for so long. You were soon proven right as you heard the ear piercing scream that only seemed to shake through you.
"Johanna!" Your voice screamed back, every bit of common sense leaving you as you bolted towards the sound of Johanna's bloody-like screams.
You left your knives on the beach, along with the rest of your team that were screaming your name, confused from your actions as they tried to keep up with you. You were in a vulnerable place as you waved your hands around, trying to keep the thick leaves, that were swang down blocking your vision, away from your face as you ran still screaming Johanna's name as much as she screamed yours.
"Johanna!" You shouted as you reached the center of the forest where Johanna's screams were.
You were moving around in the circle, trying to determine where exactly her voice was coming from. After a while it hit you as you realized that her screams were coming from above. High in the trees. Then you saw the jabberjays flopping their little wings in the air, swaying the leaves of the trees and you knew that you fell right in the Capitol's trap.
"Y/N!" Finnick's muffled voice came towards you and you quickly turned towards him. Katniss, Beetee and Peeta were there with him, looking extremely concerned.
But why were they not coming closer?
The painful sounds of Johanna's screaming was messing with your head, panick gripping onto each and every fragment of your mind and body.
Why were they not coming over? Why aren't they helping? Why are they just standing there?!
Your felt your arms moving up, your hands gripping your head to try and kill the ever racing thoughts and the continuous mocking of the jabberjays. Then, as your eyes frantically searched the area, you spotted Johanna. Her eyes full of concern only reserved for her close friends and her love.
Then, the next thing that happened just confused you even more. Finnick grabbed her arm quickly, stopping her as she moved forward towards you, ax in her hand. She twisted her arm, releasing her arm from Finnick's grip as she yelled at him while he talked to her about something that you didn't hear. Her expression changed from concerned to utterly horrified.
"Y/N!" You heard Johanna's muffled, concerned voice mixing with the imitation of the screaming that the jabberjays provided.
You didn't think, the constant screaming was too much. You ran towards her, but came to a stop when your body hit something invisible. The force field. You started banging your hands against the force field trying to ignore the looks of pity and concern from your lover, brother and allies. You didn't want to except this.
The screaming intensified as the birds got closer to you, and you found yourself sliding onto the ground, screaming bloody murder just so you could tone down the sound of Johanna's and Finnick's torturous screams. Johanna was taping on the force field shouting at you something that you didn't understand.
That's how Johanna found herself banging her ax forcefully against the force field, trying to break it. Finnick next to her, hitting the force field with his trident, his eyes full of concern as he watched his baby sister's torture.
The new hour began and Katniss watched the scene in front of her not believing the state that Johanna was in. The hurried movements with her ax, the horrified expression on her face, her eyes full of concern. She cared about someone here. She actually, genuinely, cared about someone here.
°
"Y/N!" Johanna's voice reached your ears, tearing through the ringing in them as you swayed back and forth on the ground. "The hour is up! You okay! It's over! I'm here!"
After you finally came to your senses enough to look at her, you immediately wrapped your arms around her as tightly as you possibly could, not letting go.
"Johanna," You gasped through neverending sobs as your body shook against hers. "You're all right."
"We're both alright." She answered you with the softest voice Katniss ever heard.
Later on you all gathered at the beach once again. Peeta and Beetee went of a bit further away on the beach, looking for some food. Johanna and you settled down on the edge of the beach away from the rest of the team, but still in their eyesight, and finally Katniss and Finnick sat down, learning against the trees.
"Are they together?" Katniss asked Finnick, breaking the silence. "Johanna and Y/N?"
"Yes." Finnick answered immediately, his sea-green eyes snapped to look at her gray ones. "They didn't really keep it a secret, it was private. Only Mags, Annie, Haymitch and I knew really. They wanted to keep it in the close circle of friends."
"I've never seen Johanna act like that before," Katniss quietly murmured as she processed this new information that Finnick told her. "It was quite terrifying."
"Yeah, well," Finnick couldn't help himself as he chuckled playfully at her confession. "Johanna loves her so much. It is terrifying, honestly." He, however, continued on a more serious note. "Y/N won her games a year before Johanna. She helped her when she was going through tough times after she went out of the arena. Johanna lost her family. Y/N is the only thing that she lives for, now. She said it herself when I gave her, correction," Finnick held his finger up in the air, noting that he expressed himself wrongly. "Tried, key word tried, to give her I'm-her-older-protective-brother-so-you-better-not-hurt-her speach."
"And how did that turn out?" Katniss couldn't help but to ask, given how Johanna was she knew that his answer was going to be good.
"Oh, she smacked me across the head." Finnick smiled and Katniss found herself laughing at his answer just like she expected to.
Finnick and Katniss gazed to the couple that was still knee deep in the water, arms wrapped around each other as you sat in between Johanna's legs, your back leaning against her front.
"I'm glad that they have each other," Katniss spoke her thoughts out loud. "Even though they are so different they just seem to fit so well with one another."
"Definitely."
"What the hell are you two gossiping about?" Johanna called out causing you to giggle softly as you spoke.
"Yeah! And why the hell didn't you invite us?!"

ft. katniss everdeen, peeta mellark, finnick odair, johanna mason, haymitch abernathy, effie trinket, gale hawthorne, annie cresta (separate) x gn! reader â the hunger games
â°â⧠reacting to you being flirty with themâ0.5k words
contains: some suggestive comments, i think thatâs it
†author's note: hunger games brainrot had hit me hard, i need to read the books
katniss everdeen has to do a double take sometimes because, even though she now knows sheâs conventionally pretty, she assumes most people find her disagreeable and didnât really think you would be any different. sheâs definitely the most awkward about it though, saying a curt thanks before walking off to process what just happened because she still doesnât know how to handle so much attention on her.
peeta mellark gets embarrassed easily and has his mouth slightly agape like a fish out of water at your words. his reaction will only spur you on to continue and maybe even go a bit further until heâs a pink, stuttering mess who is trying to cover his face so you donât comment on it.
haymitch abernathy will scoff and take another sip of his whiskey, telling you that you shouldnât be getting mixed up with a troubled old man like him any more than you already are. if youâre persistent, however, he may humor you and say something back if heâs really letting the booze flow, but youâll need to test your luck and see.
effie trinket will giggle with an exaggerated "oh my!" definitely the most flattered of the bunch, especially if you compliment the effort she puts into her appearance. most don't look too much into it or straight out find it to be tacky, so she genuinely appreciates your words. will probably say something that her clothes would look better on the floor of your bedroom if sheâs feeling cheeky with a wink and would blow a kiss in your direction.
finnick odair will match your energy and tease back until you two are exchanging compliments and flirtatious comments like a ping-pong match. the type of conversation that will make everyone else nearby groan or get embarrassed and yell to âget a room.â
johanna mason will match your energy tenfold until youâre the one who is on the receiving end and getting flustered at her comments ranging from how cute you are when the tables turn in you and how sexy you are when having the guts to flirt with her (most people are a bit put off by how intimidating she usually is).
gale hawthorne would try to keep his cool demeanor, staying nonchalant and replying smoothly like itâs nothing. however, heâa a bit too casual about it so youâll be led to believe heâs just not into you like that or didnât like what you said, but then heâs confused about why you donât seem as enthusiastic as you did earlier and assumes the same things youâre assumingâ the point is, you need to keep communication open. Â
annie cresta will stutter and trip over her words, blushing a bright red when she realizes you didnât hear what she said, and might end up running away to recollect herself. sheâs always been shy, but sheâs become even more timid with fear after winning the hunger games. after the first shock though, sheâs a lot less shy now knowing what to expect, and might even flirt back if you catch her at the right time.Â

thg characters getting jealous cause someone is flirting with you, like what would their reaction be? ik you did the reader getting jealous already, but i was wondering what it would be like vice versa
-đȘ·
slight nsfw | mdni
coriolanus - coryo has two reactions okay. heâs either so secure in your devotion to him that he doesnât care. or heâs so angry that heâs taking you home and showing you just how much you belong to him and him only by fucking you hard and deep.
tigris - tigris would be the type to walk up to you, kiss your cheek and take you away from the person ever so subtly showing that you belong to her. she would do it with a smile on her face.
sejanus - sejanus would furrow his eyebrows and be internally insecure. what if you found that person to be more attractive than him? i donât think he would react in the moment but when you got home, the two of you would have a conversation and you would have to reassure him that you love him.
finnick - okay so truthfully, i donât see finnick as the jealous type. i think he would see someone talking to you and he would be amused. and when you guys had alone time, he would ask you about it in a teasing way until heâs like âwell, i think i should show you that youâre mine, huh?â with a charming smile on his face. to which leads to him worshipping your body.
johanna - sheâs full on jealous and isnât ashamed. sheâll walk up to you and look at the person and go âtheyâre mine. go away.â before softly kissing your lips.
peeta - peeta wouldnât get jealous either. i think heâs a very go with the flow person but also lowkey oblivious. so i donât think he would notice that someoneâs flirting with you. he would just think theyâre being friendly.
katniss - katniss would watch the whole thing and then pretend as though it doesnât bother her. but when she gives you the cold shoulder afterwards, you have to pry it out of her. and then you guys have a conversation about it.

hi! could you write a Johanna x fem!reader fic where the reader is a tribute from district 11? She won the 69th games when she was 12-14, and during her game, she became very close friends with an older tribute from District 5 (they were like Rue and Katniss). the older tribute died for reader.
Johanna and reader know each other from the few years where they had been dragged to the capitol to "mentor" for the games. they became very close.
when reader was also reaped for the quarter quell, johanna was there to comfort her as soon as she could.
johanna and reader protect each other in the arena, and reader gets captured by the capitol instead of johanna.
afraid to love you - j.m.
pairings: johanna mason x reader (romantic), platonic katniss everdeen x reader, platonic finnick odair x reader, platonic peeta mellark x reader
summary: Johanna Mason loved you, she loved how passionate you are and how kind and caring you are. When you got dragged to the capital to mentor the tributes a few times, at first you hated Johanna, but then you grew to love her. What happens when in the quarter quell of the 75th hunger games youâre captured by the capital and Johanna is left alone in District 13?
a/n: i changed some things ^^
warnings: graphic volence, graphic torture, angst, some fluff
You hated this, hated the unknown of it all. A part of you was glad that it had been you and not Johanna. At least you were semi liked by the capital so they would not kill you at least. You sighed, youâve been unable to close your eyes ever since you woke up here, in this disgustingly bright white room.
âAre you Y/N L/N?â A man in a white coat and a badge asked, walking into the room with an air of confidence. You scowled at the man. You didnât answer his question.
âIt would be better for you to answer my questions. Are you Y/N L/N?â He repeated the previous question. You grit your teeth, still not saying a word.
âAlright then, youâll learn to talk eventually.â He said, his hand hovering over the plethora of tools in front of him. You looked at him in silent horror, a plea in your eyes but nonetheless that did not stop the man from picking up tweezers and placing them under your first finger nail.
CRACK!
You closed your eyes tightly, biting your lip to stifle your scream. The man chuckled at you. Muttering something about how youâll start screaming soon.
He went to your other finger nail. Ripping the nail out of its nailbed, you groaned but the scream was muffled back down your throat again.
You started to lose track of time, the hours seemingly endless and the torture nonstop. Heâd ask the same questions, while taking each nail he could.
âAre you Y/N L/N?â
âWhere are the rebels hiding?â
âWere you in on the plan?â
âWho is the leader of the rebels?â
Over and over and over again.
You donât know when you started screaming or when your voice became hoarse. The lights beginning to truly make your eyes hurt.
The man decided eventually to move onto another type of torture. He put a rag over your head, and then came the water.
You werenât expecting this, you werenât expecting to be waterboarded. The water seems to be endless, soaking into your nostrils, your mouth, and your eyes. You gagged, choking on the water and coughing but having no break with it. Water getting into your lungs causing your chest to heave painfully.
You donât know when you passed out or if you ever did. Time became nothing more than torturous. Tick tock, the clock would go, you supposed the clock is there to make you feel insane.
When that wasnât enough theyâd inject something into your veins, it made you scream and writhe in your bounds. It felt like your bones were on fire, like your stomach acid is burning through your fat, skin, and muscle.
Sometimes you would get a hallucinogen. Youâd see Johanna, but it wasnât her. Sheâd come to save you, hold you, and then you would wake crying.
âOh my godâŠâ You heard her, you heard Johanna. Unsure if this is just a trick or hallucination you cracked your eyelids open. When did you get here? It wasnât as bright, it definitely was not the capital.
You wriggled a bit, bringing your hand to your face. You gazed unsurely at your own hand, unsure if this is real. Your eyes shifted to Johannaâs figure, you didnât feel anything, not relief, not happiness. Youâve been through this too many times to get hopeful only to have everything ripped away the next second.
âYouâre not real. Youâre not real, youâre not real, youâre not real.â You chanted over and over again, shaking your head you refused to believe this was real. Too many times you had the hope, had Johanna, ripped away from your grasp.
âDove?â You shook your head again, tears stinging at your eyes.
âItâs me, I.. Iâm real. I swear.â This was different, the hallucinations never demanded that they were real. A spark of hope fired into your chest.
âJo?â You replied tearfully, hopefully even. You sounded so unsure that it broke Johannaâs heart. You then spotted Katniss and Finnick behind Johanna. A sob broke through your pale cracked lips.
You were muttering incomprehensible words to yourself, rocking back and forth.
âItâs me, they canât hurt you anymore. I wonât let them.â Johanna murmured, stepping to your bedside. You looked up, tears streaming down your cheeks, raw emotion in your eyes. You tentatively reached out to her, to Johanna.
Johanna took the hand that had shakenly been moving towards her. She brought your hand to her lips kissing it.
âThis is realâŠâ You muttered in disbelief. Jo finally let a few tears fall.
âY/N, Iâm so sorry⊠I tried to get you three back sooner. I am so sorry.â Katniss said, her voice cracking. You looked up at the woman, a woman so brave for someone whoâs just a kid.
âItâs ok. They didnât break me.â You said, albeit emotionally but youâre not hundred percent ok right not and thatâs fine.
The five of you huddled into a hug. Peeta somehow snuck into the hug as well. and you all laughed, you were all together again. You might never be the same but at least you were alive and had everything you needed.

how ticklish do u think the hunger games ppl you write for are? asking for a friendđ«Ł
my brand...thank u
coryo: unpopular opinion maybe but like a solid 7/10. will get very huffy and pouty if you try to tickle him though, he is not a fan. has this really cute, uncharacteristic giggle. ribs and underarms are the worst spots and he will curse at you and threaten ur life.
finnick: he's one of those ppl that can turn being ticklish on and off like a superpower, but if you catch him off guard, he's like a 6/10. thinks it's a cute way to flirt so he'll let you get away with it but then he will turn the tables later. snorts when he laughs too hard and is a lil embarrassed about it.
gale: not that ticklish, like a 4/10. only ticklish in a few places like his ribs. will immediately turn the tables if you try to tickle him.
johanna: idk she genuinely strikes me as someone who is not ticklish at all, like a 0/10 but maybe she has one or two sensitive spots. if you try tickling her, she is immediately going to pin you down and destroy you. proceed with caution.
katniss: also doesn't have very ticklish energy to me?? like, she is, most people are, but she's like a very normal amount of sensitive, like a 6/10 probably. her neck and ears are ticklish and she will flail and kick if you try.
lucy gray: i don't know why i, the person who normally has to headcanon every character i like as being extremely ticklish, is not getting ticklish vibes from these characters but lucy gray is just...not that sensitive either!! she's ticklish on her sides mostly and has this adorable, melodic laugh, but i also think of all these characters, she's the one i picture would like being tickled.
peeta: okay, now peeta is definitely very ticklish, like a 7 or 8/10. his stomach is his worst spot and he has this adorable laugh that just makes people melt. is very squirmy but will try to stay still so he doesn't accidentally whack you.
sejanus: officially dubbing him the most ticklish hunger games character, coming in at a 9/10. just look at that cute face and tell me he isn't ticklish, i dare you. gets very flustered and giggly. sensitive everywhere, absolutely adorable i lvoe him.

[post-war] johanna w an s/o that became attached to a stray cat that's absolutely disgusting, like matted fur, fleas and ticks, starving, sick, and smelly.
johanna won't let her girlfriend bring it inside so her girlfriend is outside during the cold winter feeding and trying to nuture this cat back to health.
one day, reader goes out to check on the cat and can't find it. she gets super worked up and runs back inside to find jo, to tell her the sad news, but she finds jo leaning over the bathtub, her front half soaked with bath water, as she's trying to wash this cat..
roscoe.
pairing: johanna mason x fem!reader
content warnings: pre-established relationship, set post war, jo hates animals cause of a bad experience, use of petnames (doll, babe, baby), chiwawa slander (sorry!), strong language but that's not new, a bit of grumpy x sunshine because i love that trope!!
word count: 0.9k
Johanna has never been an animal person. Well, no, that is a bit of a lie. Correction; she has never been an animal person since she was attacked by a bastard of a chiwawa at the tender age of six. Rocky has since given her a very personal vendetta against animals big and small.Â
So, in the early days after the war, when you come home with a stray cat that you have christened Roscoe, she has a big problem with it. Itâs obvious to anyone with a brain that Johanna loves you. In fact, she would even go as far as to say she loves you more than life itself. But when it comes to animals, especially evil things like cats, that is where she draws the line.Â
She puts a good three feet between the two of you when she sees the cat in your arms. Pinching the bridge of her nose, she tries to keep her temper in check. âDoll, that⊠thing is not staying in the house.â
You frown and immediately start protesting. âBut Iâve given him a name and all!â
Johanna huffs out a sigh. âBabe, I donât care if youâve bought the thing a birth certificate, it is not staying in the house.â
âWhy the hell not?âÂ
She arches a brow, giving you a disapproving look as if the answer is clear. âWell, for starters, his fur is matted beyond belief. Itâs all skin and bones, too. I bet itâll die in a week.âÂ
âJo! Donât be mean.â You scold, holding the cat close to your chest. âDonât listen to your mom, Roscoe. Shes just being cranky.âÂ
Johanna rolls her eyes. âI am not that catâs mom. And you know Iâm telling the truth, babe.âÂ
You shoot her a glare. âPoor thing was left here all on its own after the bombings. He must have been scared by all of the noise.â You smooth underneath Roscoeâs chin and he purrs in response. âLook, he likes me!â
She groans. âBabe, you know Iâd give you the world if you asked me to, but that thing is not gonna last a week. You shouldnât get attached to it.â
You wave a dismissive hand. âHeâll be fine. Remind me to pick up some milk for him in the markets. Dyou think heâll eat tuna?âÂ
âDoll-, Remiââ
âRoscoe.â
âRemi, Roscoe, Riley, whatever youâve called him, is going right back outside.â
âButââ
âNow, baby.â
You sigh. Maybe Johanna has a pint in some ways, but you canât help but feel awful as you put Roscoe back out the front door and watch him bound away down the half- repaired street.Â
Johanna walks up behind you and wraps her arms around your waist, resting her chin on the top of your head. âDo you know cats can fend for themselves?â
âIts still not fair. Heâs only a baby, Jo.â You sigh, melting into her touch when she presses a kiss to your head. ââM mad at you now.â
Johanna resists the urge to laugh. Youâre far too kind for your own good. âWould you feel better if we made some of those cookies I know you like?âÂ
You try to stay mad at her, but the offer is too appealing to pass up. âFine. But only if you do all the work. And I am still buying him fish and milk.âÂ
âWhatever you want, angel. But heâs not coming back in to the house. He could have fleas or something.â
âYou have fleas,â You murmur.Â
Johanna laughs. âOi. Watch it or you wonât get any cookies.âÂ
â©âââââââââââ©ââââââââââ©
As the months pass by, Roscoe comes to your front door at seven oâclock in the morning and evening every day for his dinner. Despite Johannaâs insistence that heâs not allowed in the house, she doesnt try to stop you from taking care of him, so long as youâre outside.Â
It begins to get colder and one day, you come home from the marketplace with a carton of milk and a metal can of tuna in your hands. You pour both of them into the bowls by your front door and wait, rocking on the balls of your feet.Â
Itâs not unusual for Roscoe to come and go as he pleases, but when youâve been outside for an hour and he doesnât make an appearance, worry starts to gnaw at your gut.
You slip back into the house and do the only thing you can think of. âJo?!â
You can hear Johanna hiss in pain and curse underneath her breath from inside the bathroom. Your brows furrow and you follow the noise, noticing the high-pitched mewl that comes from behind the door. You breathe out a sigh of relief and push open the door, only to become even more puzzled,Â
Johannaâs hunched over the bath, holding Roscoe with one hand and using a jug to pour water over him with the other.Â
âAre you drowning him?â You squeal, rushing to her side.
Johanna laughs at that. âWhat do you take me for, babe? Iâm not drowning him, Iâm giving him a bath,â she rolls her eyes.
You frown. âYouâre⊠giving him a bath?âÂ
âYeah. Heâs smelly,â Johanna shrugs.Â
âBut you hate him.â
âWell, by the looks of things, he is not going anywhere anytime soon, so we might as well make him presentable or something.âÂ
You grin. âYou like him, donât you?âÂ
Johannaâs lips twitch. âI donât hate him.âÂ
You kneel down beside her and pet Roscoeâs wet coat of black fur. A giggle slips past your lips before you have a chance to stop it. âWell, I reckon heâll hate you after this bath.â
She rolls her eyes. âSomehow I think Iâll live.â

thank you for requesting! i hope you enjoy <3
Hey, Brother
Johanna Mason x Fem!Reader, Finnick Odair x Fem!Sister!Reader
warnings: poorly written angst, mention of sex trafficking, not proofread
word count: 1258
a/n: hey guys! thank you so much for all the requests, i promise i'm working on them all as quickly as i can.
the room fell into a deafening silence. Finnick stood frozen in place, his eyes wide as he stared at his younger sister. the words had left your mouth before you had a chance to think, a desperate plea to the universe.
âi volunteer as tribute,â you found yourself repeating, the words tasted bitter on your tongue. you locked eyes with your brother, his usually bright eyes were dull with shock. his girlfriend, the woman who had slowly become a sister to you, stood beside to you. her eyes were filled with tears, threatening to spill over any second. you had just volunteered for her.
the tension in the room was palpable, you could feel the weight of everyone's gaze on you. suddenly, your skin felt hot, and the air was heavy with fear and anticipation, the silence was broken only by the soft sobs of Annie.
ây/n-â Finnick began, his voice was choked with emotion but you cut him off with a shake of your head. you didnât need his protest, this was your decision, your sacrifice. the announcer, a man with a voice too cheerful for the occasion, quickly moved onto announcing the male tribute, effectively ending the discussion.
the atmosphere thick with suspense as the man reaches into the bowl, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. his fingers dance over the folded slips of paper before finally settling on one. he slowly, almost painfully, pulls it out, leisurely unfolding it as if to prolong the tension. his gaze drops to the paper, absorbing the name written there before raising his eyes to meet the audience's expectant gaze. the name echoes through the silent room, "Finnick Odair."
as the name settles in the air, you can feel your heart plummet to your stomach. your eyes, wide with shock and disbelief, dart to the other male victors, silently begging them to volunteer in your brother's place. but none of them do. why would they? you were all promised peace and safety if you managed to survive your respective games. how dare they betray that promise and bring you back into the fray, turning you against these people youâve known, and grown fond of, for so long?
your frantic thoughts are interrupted by Finnick gently cupping your cheeks and pulling your face towards him. the sincerity in his voice is like a balm to your fraying nerves as he mutters, âyouâll be okay." his eyes, full of determination and promises, bore into yours. "iâll keep you safe.â he mutters, pressing a soft kiss to your hairline before holding your head under his chin in a hug.
Finnick had always been your protector, sacrificing everything to keep you safe, to keep the people he loved out of harm's way. when he denied his body to the capitol, you had been reaped just the following year. in his eyes, that was his punishment for his disobedience.
pulling away from him, your hand presses firmly against his chest as you meet his gaze. âno, Finn, you need to keep yourself safe. okay? you have- you have Annie, you need to be okay for her.â your voice cracks, tears welling up in your eyes despite your best efforts to hold them back.
before your brother can respond, you are torn from each other's arms, whisked away to your respective rooms as they prepare the train to the capitol.
sitting in silence, you are left alone with your thoughts, which prove to be overwhelming. as much as you want to focus on your brother's safety, your thoughts drift to a certain short-haired brunette girl. your brotherâs best friend.
the realization of these thoughts terrifies you, but you know theyâre true. Johanna is the only living female victor of District 7, sheâs going to be in the arena with you, with Finnick. your mind races with images of the other victors, the potential tributes, most of them your friends, people youâve practically grown up with.
you're painfully aware that you won't make it out of this arena alive. you don't possess the same fighting instincts as the others. your victory in your games came from hiding, staying just out of sight, letting the others kill each other off. the very thought of having to kill a stranger is unbearable, let alone people you care about. the mere idea of having to harm one of your friends, of losing your brother, of losing Johanna is enough to make your stomach churn.
â
"are you completely out of your fucking mind?!" you hear the loud, scathing words, each one landing like a punch. the voice is painfully familiar and it inevitably makes you flinch, your body involuntarily shrinking inwards.
Finnick flashes you a knowing smirk, patting your shoulder in a show of mock solidarity. "all yours, champ," he chuckles, his amusement clear as the day. he then saunters off towards a shadowy figure in the distance, a girl whose face you canât quite make out, probably that District 12 girl he knew.
you take a deep, steadying breath before spinning around. there, standing in front of you, is Johanna Mason in all her intimidating glory. "Johanna," you greet, a gentle smile playing on your lips, a stark contrast to the situation at hand. "you look beautiful." attempting to soften the tension, you place your hand on the side of her bicep.
"do not," she practically snarls, her anger palpable as she slaps your hand away with a quick, sharp movement. "what the hell were you thinking, y/n? volunteering? Why the fuck would you do that?!" her stern tone echoes around you.
"Annie... she couldn't handle coming back here, Jo," you attempt to explain, your words desperate. "you have to understandâŠ" as you speak, you silently curse the feelings you harbor towards the brunette. in this moment, you can't help but feel like a chastised child.
in many ways, you are a child. the games stole your innocence, your childhood, forcing you to navigate through a maze of emotions in the most unhealthy manner.
Johanna's sigh breaks the silence. the frustration is evident in her posture, her face, everything about her. "listen to me, okay?" she pleads, placing her hands on your shoulders with a firm grip. "i need you to stay with me, and trust in what i do, alright? i'll keep you safe." her voice is uncharacteristically soft.
you blink at her, taken aback. "both you and Finnick have said that to me now," you groan, shrugging her hands off of you. "i can take care of myself, Johanna. i know you guys donât want to believe it, but itâs true. iâm just as much an adult as you are," your words are blunt, full of pent-up frustration.
"hey, no," the brunette argues, her grip tightening on your shoulders once more. "i know youâre an adult, y/n, i just- i'll feel a lot better in the arena knowing youâre safe." you frown, about to retort, but Johanna cuts you off, "promise me."
you sigh, "Johanna-"
"no, promise me. now," she insists, her eyebrows furrowing as she holds eye contact with you, her grip unyielding. "promise me, y/n. please."
your eyes search hers, finding nothing but sincerity. "fine." you grumble.
"say it, tell me you promise youâll stay close to me."
"what if-"
"no 'what ifs', say it," she narrows her eyes, the intensity of her gaze unrelenting.
"i promise iâll stay close to you," you mutter, puffing out your cheeks in defeat.

Unexpected
~~~~~
summary: Johanna Mason had a plan for the 71st Hunger Games but she never expected a budding relationship with one of the other tributes let alone a Career
wc: 4.4k
warnings: use of y/n, mdni, character death, angst, graphic violence, mentions of forced prostitution, swearing
~~~~~
Everything was perfectly as planned. Johanna might have had a few bruises from the stunt she pulled at the parade but other than that, everyone fully believed she was weak. Even her district partner believed it, opting to sit with the other tributes. She credited her ability to cry on cue. Johanna was now sitting alone on the training center secretly observing her competition.
That was until a girl put her tray in front of her. When Johanna looked up she was met with the eyes of a career. God she hated them, thinking they owned the place. âHi. Iâm y/n from District 4.â Johanna knew who she was, this year among the careers, she was the top of the food chain. Your brother is the one and only Capitol Darling Finnick Odair.
Johanna stayed quiet hoping the girl in front of her would hurry up and tell her what she was doing here with her. The top of the food chain with the bottom. You didnât say anything eating her food in silence. It was annoying the district 7 tribute, so she mustered up her meekest voice. âW-why are you sitting with me?â
âMy brother won when I was 11 and he would take me out to sea to fish and train. It didnât go too well with my classmates. They said it was unfair that I got to go on all these âfield tripsâ. They were jealous and their jealousy quickly became hate.â What does that have to do with me? Johanna thought. âAnyway I know what itâs like to be an outcast. Itâs not fun, so seeing you alone, I didnât want that for you.â It was like you read her mind, answering her question as soon as she asked it in her head. For the rest of lunch you asked her about her life in District 7 and playing up to the weakling she was, didnât speak, only opting to shake or nod her head.
Still, you found out a lot. First talking about your brother and then turning the conversation to Johannaâs siblings. She didnât know what compelled her to tell the truth about them. Nodding when you counted to 4 and then again when you got the correct number of brothers, 3, which meant you knew she had a sister. Other things like her being the middle child, her age (17) and her favorite color (Green because of the forests) were discovered.
Johanna found out about your favorite color (blue for the ocean), your most prized possession was the conch shell you found at the beach, your relationship with Finnick, how he was protective and caring under all that bravado.
After lunch, Johanna fully expected you to rejoin the careers but you didnât. You went to the weapons station and picked up an axe, which was not in the category of your specialty weapons. âStabby stabsâ as you called it. She sat in the corner hugging her knees as everyone over looked her. For good measure, Johanna decided to cry again.
Through blurry vision, Johanna watched you with the instructor learning the basics. It was okay form and she couldnât say anything without giving herself away so she turned her attention to crying again. It was its own workout. She buried her face into her knees and practically cried herself to sleep.
Johanna was woken up by you gently shaking her shoulder. You were sitting on your knees at her level. In a calm, soothing and oddly charming voice, you persistently asked her to join you for training. No was not accepted as an answer so Johanna was dragged to the weapons section. You picked up an axe and Johanna dreaded not being able to swing it around like she could. Oh god Iâm going to have to pretend to be bad. She thought.
As soon as you instructed Johanna to hold it with 2 hands, she dropped it to the floor. âIâm sorry. I wasnât ready.â She forced the tears to well up.
âNo. Itâs okay.â You consoled her with patience and shook your head helping Johanna lift it. She let you adjust her grip and your eyes lingered on her hands for a few seconds. You simplified your explanations after that and Johanna assumed you were giving up on a hopeless tribute from District 7 who couldnât even hold their trade weapon but still being nice.
By the second day of training, it was clear you separated yourself from the career pack. Going to the survival sections and checking in on Johanna throughout the day retelling her about what you learned. Finnick got you in a habit of teaching him what he taught you saying the best way to truly know something was to teach to someone else.
The sibling-ship between you and Finnick was definitely stronger than her own relationship with her own siblings. You always had a story with him, like how you almost drowned him, how he let you drive the boat, or even the stupid dolphin sounds he made when a pod of dolphins swam next to the boat. You had your own whale speak that you demonstrated and gave Johanna second-hand embarrassment. She couldnât have possibly shrunk any smaller.
Johanna wouldnât lie, you were making her job a lot easier for her checking on her less and less throughout the day, quickly leaving when you couldnât stop her from crying. God she hasnât cried this much ever, her stomach was hurting to the point of nausea. To everyone else it looked like you were getting tired of her but she knew you better. You silently left a bottle with her name on the label of water filled with electrolytes so she could replenish the salt she lost while crying.
Johanna nearly had a heart attack when she saw your score after the individual assessment. An 11! Even after taking time to take care of her. Had you been prioritizing yourself, Johanna was sure you wouldâve gotten a 12. Anyway, you did miles better than she had, earning the lowest training score ever at 2. Though according to plan, she couldnât help but think about how youâd react to it. Were you disappointed?
During the interview with Caesar Flickerman, you addressed stepping away from the pack. âOh those rumors are true. I donât need them to win clearly with the score I got.â You flashed them a smirk that got everyone swooning over you. Johanna hated it, they didnât even know like she did. They didnât know that your favorite animal was a manatee. They didnât know that you scratched your ear lobe when you were deep in thought. They definitely didnât know that when you laughed, you place your hand over your heart. âAnd if that puts a target on my back, let them, Iâll kill them all.â
There was a flicker of darkness in your eyes and a venom in your voice that spread goosebumps over Johannaâs arms. The way you looked into the camera was like you were talking to her specifically. A horrible thought surfaced in her head. You were at the top of the tributes, you could easily feign kindness and kill her. It wasnât ridiculous, after all, she herself was acting. It never occurred to her that someone else could be acting because at the end of the game, there would only be one victor. When the games started she needed to get away from you.
Johanna focused on herself, trying to speak about her family but then burst into tears again. She spent the rest of her interview time crying. It was getting old, even Johanna herself was getting tired of it by now. Blight was there to retrieve her after it and handed her a water bottle. âItâs from the District 4 girl.â
âY/n.â She whispered, Johanna felt her heart tighten in her chest. Why am I feeling this way? She pushed it away, these were her cards and now all there was left to do was wait.
The arena was mountainous and rocky with patches of trees. When Johanna rose into it, she saw the cornucopia, and in the center, was a battle axe. You were six podiums to her left and when she found you, you were already looking at her. The moment the gong sounded, Johanna stumbled off her podium and ran toward the trees. She needed to get away from the bloodbath.
Just before reaching the tree line, Johanna dared to turn back. She saw you in the center dodging an attack from someone and grabbing a knife from the pile to slit their throats. You grabbed a harpoon, and a couple more knives before slinging a backpack over your shoulder. You made eye contact with her across the way before darting your eyes towards your left and her right.
When Johanna followed your gaze, she found the District 2 girl running towards her with a sword. Before she could even be close enough to start swinging the sword, a barbed dart flew into her head and her whole body jerked back to the ground as her head snapped. You gathered the rope around your arm and pulled the harpoon out of the dead Career. Johanna stood frozen, the center of the cornucopia and the edge of the tree line was at least 100ft and you just killed the career easily while she was moving.
âGo.â You said putting your hand on her shoulder and forcing her to run. âGO!â Johanna didnât need to be told twice, and ran through the trees. Dodging and weaving were second nature to Johanna especially either all the tree farms. You followed closely behind for a while until you found a small cave, skidding to a stop. âJohanna! Over here!â Johanna was panicking. She just ran so fast for so long people would clearly start being suspicious. The District 7 resorted to dry heaving. âOh. Oh man.â You said, you grabbed her arms and placed them behind her head. âOpen up your airway love.â
Johanna was fine, but something about the way you called her love made all of her pretending go away. âIâm okay y/n. Iâm fine.â Well almost. Her voice still had the softness to it. For the night, you tried to fit Johanna and yourself in the cave but she were hesitant.
You had unpacked your bag before asking Johanna a question, âJo. Come on whatâs wrong?â
âWhat if you try to kill me?â
You gave her a glare under the flashlight. âHoney, if I wanted you dead, I wouldâve done it by now.â That shut Johanna up real quick and apparently the entire cave too. She did not expect to be scolded. âWhy did you look back? God you were such an idiot. You couldâve gotten yourself killed.â
âI donât know.â She did know. Johanna needed to know you were okay but she wasnât going to tell you that. âWhy did you save me?â
âI do not want or need your obituary to say death by standing in the middle of a cornucopia bloodbath.â
Johanna wasnât sure what your plan was. Didnât you know that there could only be one victor? What were you going to do when there was only the two of them left? It seems to Johanna that you werenât going to think about it until then.
She didnât mind it, sitting all day in a cave might be boring but if she isnât doing anything, Johannaâs conserving energy. You and Johanna shared more about your homes, you more than her since now everything was on camera. At night you sat quietly holding Johanna in the sleeping bag you shared, she was sniffling and you decided to glide your nails over her forearm.
On the second day, after a bit of hiking you found a large river and immediately jumped in after stripping. âCome in the water!â You laughed cupping a handful of water and drinking it.
âI donât know how to swim.â Johanna replied meekly.
Your shoulders visibly dropped before making your way back to the shore. Suddenly you stopped eyeing something down stream. You squinted your eyes and Johanna watched you sink your head underwater only to surface 20ft away fighting a red splashing fish the size of your torso. You laughed as its tail whacked you in the stomach. With incredible strength you hoisted it between your arms and slid your fingers into the second gill and pulled. The fish stopped moving and you held it over your shoulders as you finally made it back to shore.
âDinner! And breakfast and lunch and dinner again. For the two of us, I could probably last a few days. I hope youâre not allergic to fish Anna.â A small ding sounded and Johanna found a parachute floating right towards you as you were now gutting the fish. You paused for a second opening it to a full ice chest. âThankâs Finn!â After cutting the fish into pieces, you and Johanna continued hiking finding another cave.
For the next couple of days, you and Johanna stayed in the cave only going out to get water. Johanna played her weakling part, clinging to your arm to not go. The compromise you came to was that Johanna would sit at the entrance with a knife and watch your back as you went to grab water.
On day 5, you told Johanna that since they were nearing the top 8 tributes, they would be interviewing family soon. She hoped her family knew what her plan was and made something up. You ran out of food this morning and told Johanna to not worry about you when you went out. It was only a few minutes you were out of site that a cannon sounded.
Johanna immediately ran out of the cave. âJohanna? Johanna!â She heard you call.
âY/n!â She called back. You ran up the ridge to her. âI thought you-â
You pulled her into a hug shushing her. âItâs okay Jo. Iâm here.â You stroked her hair trying to calm her. She spent the rest of the walk to the river clinging to your arm. The two of you made your way back to where you left your harpoon only to literally see all the water drained into the floor.
âWhat are they doing?â
âThe Gamemakers are draining the river, probably to set up something to bring tributes together.â
âWe donât have to go right?â
âWe need the water.â
âHow long can we survive without water?â
â3 days.â
âCan we make it 3 days.â
âYes but whoâs to say the Gamemakers wonât wait 3 days to bring everyone together? When weâre desperate water.â
Johanna hated the Capitol. She hated being at their mercy. And she hated her plan right about now. The clueless weak girl that could do nothing could probably tap a tree for sugar and water by now if she had just showed who she was from the beginning and gotten that axe. But had she done that, she wouldnât have you.
You and Johanna toughed it out waiting the rest of the day and the next before an announcement sounded. Attention Tributes tomorrow morning at the Cornucopia you are invited to attend. Each of you desperately needs something. That will be the only announcement. May the odds be ever in your favor.â
There hadnât been a cannon since the scare cannon a few days ago. With the fallen tributes tribute that night, you figured out that besides you and Johanna, there were the rest of the careers, a boy from 9 and a girl from 11. You were stressed, Johanna could tell, you were fiddling with a rope you brought in as your token running your fingers through the grooves.
Hiking back to the Cornucopia at night was pretty easy since you and Johanna spent most of your time in cave. Johanna navigated through the trees easily, being from 7 and working in the tree farms, she had to know the way home or sheâd become the forest witchâs food, or she was told. The two of you made it to the cornucopia in the middle of the night just after they played the anthem where no fallen tributes appeared.
In the night, neither you or Johanna could get some sleep knowing there were tributes around. You sat back to back and eventually you used Johannaâs shoulder as a head rest and she felt your soft breathing on her neck. Your right hand reached for her left behind you and you ran your thumb over the back of her skin. Johanna turned her head to look at you only finding that you were already looking at her with a sparkle in your eyes. She mightâve imagined it but your eyes were focused on her lips. Johanna felt a weird feeling in her stomach. Part of her wanted you lean in. That thought scared her so she laid on your shoulder. Johnna felt her face go red as she stared ahead to watch you 6.
In the morning, you gave Johanna a knife and told her to walk in front of you. The plan was to get what you needed and get the hell out of there. You stood with you back facing her as being the first people here meant you were the first targets, but sheâs seen you throw. It felt like forever waiting for the feast but then Johanna heard a humming and saw the packs. Before it could even finish rising, Johanna grabbed the District 7 pack and District 4 pack trying to run away.
You held an arm out to stop her. Across the way were the four remaining careers. Johanna almost questioned why you didnât throw your harpoon but then that would be taking your only weapon away. The careers charged towards them raising their weapons. You gripped Johannaâs shoulders as you strapped the backpacks onto her. âRun! You hear me? Run and donât look back!â
She took off through the cornucopia but stopped when she heard a cannon. You were her ally and friend, she wasnât going to leave, not after everything you have done for her. In the cornucopia, the battle axe from the first day was no longer there. There were smaller chopping axes and splitting axes thatâll have to do. Johanna picked them up hearing metal clash against metal outside.
She heard groaning that wasnât yours and another strike that caused another man to scream. Then the dread filled her ears, she heard you gasp in pain fall to the ground with a thud. Johanna gritted her teeth when she heard the careers taunting you.
âNow that youâre as good as dead, your little cry baby is nex-â
Johanna put an axe in his face before he could even finish his sentence and before the other two careers managed to make sense of what was going on, the District 7 tribute had swung in their direction. The second one was barely lifted his bloody sword before Johanna literally chopped his head off.
Johanna saw red, hacking and swinging at everyone around her. The boy from 4 put up a fight but was so badly injured by you that he didnât stand a chance against her. Back at the feast table, someone else had grabbed a backpack trying to run from the danger but Johanna threw the knife you gave her into the personâs calf. In one swift motion, she removed the axe from the careerâs face and split this tributeâs head down the middle.
Blood sprayed on her face. When she looked up, the girl had wide eyes and tripped on the floor falling face first into the gravel. Johanna ran straight to her and swung at her shoulder. She was down but Johanna kept swinging until her body was nothing but a messed up pile of flesh and blood.
Looking around with a strong grip on the axe, she couldnât see anyone else so Johanna quickly ran towards you. As she approached you, she heard a quiet voice congratulating her but ignored it. You were on the ground in your own pool of blood. The red liquid was flowing out of your torso and your eyes and her heart clenched. âCome on we have to go!â
âJohanna? Youâre alive? Youâre okay?â You choked out.
âYeah Iâm fine. Theyre dead. We need to go before the others come.â Johanna slings her arm over to carry her but you groaned at the slightest movement.
âJo. Johanna! Stop! Thereâs no one left Jo. 22 cannons. Weâre the last two.â Johanna was shocked she thought she was keeping track too but she mustâve lost count somewhere. Johanna realized the gravity of your situation. he should have told you she could fight. She couldâve grabbed an axe faster to help you. She mightâve blown her cover but you would still be okay. And you were, Johanna brought her hands to your stomach and pressed into it.
âHey tell my brother I love him okay?â Her heart beat soared and she felt it in her throat when you said that. You were dying. She let out a choked sob.
âNo. No! No you are not dying on me. Youâre going to win this and tell him yourself.â She yelled.
âLove, judging by how strong your voice is, only one of us is on our death bed.â
No! Shut up! Stay with me. Stay with me please. Do you hear me? I canât lose you Y/n!â
âYou donât have a choice Jo.â
She did have a choice. She chose to present herself as weak and now you were dying because she let you do all the work. You couldâve been a power duo, at least you wouldnât have had to 1v4 the rest of the careers. Even though the careers had stabbed you, it was Johannaâs fault and for the first time since her reaping, she cried real tears.
âIâm sorry. Iâm so sorry.â
You shook your head and struggled to open your eyes to meet Johannaâs. âDonât be. You have nothing to apologize for.â
âI lied to you. I- I killed them all. It was all an act, the crying, the fainting, the training score. It wasnât supposed to be like this.â If she didnât have tears streaming out of her eyes she would have seen the smug smile on your face.
You reached up to cup her cheek swiping the blood from it. You shushed her caressing her face. âYou give them hell Johanna.â Johanna let out a whimper leaning into your hand as she pressed into you harder to stop the bleeding.
Something weird filled her vision, waves breaking over the rocks, Finnickâs smile, swimming with the dolphins, a field of wild flowers. The conch shell you liked to listen to after catching it and herself sitting alone at lunch.
Boom.
Johanna burst into tears and buried her face into your neck crying, leaving a trail of snot on your shoulder. She wiped the snot with the back of her hand not caring that she just smeared your blood on her face. Ladies and Gentleman the victor of the 71st Hunger Games Johanna Mason.
You were gone, just like that. You didnât deserve it, you were a good person. She came in here with a plan and she never expected to fall in love let alone have an ally. She hated the Capitol and she is going to give them hell. They will regret taking you from her.
~
Outside of the helpless girl act, Johanna proved to be a formidable district girl. She was known as strong, cunning, angry and after refusing to prostitution, extra angry.
Johanna was standing on an empty balcony swirling a drink around with a scowl on her face. There was no need to be cordial with everyone. She openly hated them and everyone praised her for her strategy even fooling a career. You werenât just a career to her, you were an ally, a friend, her love. She cried all her tears for you, vowing never to cry again.
She heard the door click open and was about to rip into this person until she turned and came face to face with the familiar sea green eyes and tanned skin. Johanna didnât know how much attention she gave to you and your features until now. âFinnick.â
âJohanna.â He said. The newest victor immediately back tracked on her vow. Tears welled in her eyes but she didnât let them fall. Here she was categorizing her feelings to love when it did not compare to Finnickâs pain. He practically raised you and it showed on his face, the half smiles and the bags under his eyes, his disheveled hair, though all the capitol elites found it hot.
He leaned against the same railing facing the opposite way to Johanna. He didnât offer to talk, sitting in the silence was an Odair thing apparently, not that Johanna knew what to say anyway.
She settled for, âI keep thinking about what would have happened if I picked up the axe sooner. I might not have had an ally in her but sheâd probably be alive. Some ally I was.â
Finnick had turned his body to her. âI thought Y/n was crazy for wanting to be your ally after the first day of training.â Johanna looked at him puzzled, thinking back to what she possibly could have done to get you to want her. She cried, you sat with her for lunch and you taught her how to use an axe. Well as much as you can teach someone who already knew how. âBut I guess she saw something in you.â
âWhen she taught you how to tie a knot or any other skills, did you pretend to be bad?â
âYeah. Why?â
It was the axe, Johanna remembered now, when you looked at her hands and then gave her less explanations on how to wield one. Of course, you taught Finnick skills he already knew so you could commit it to memory and actually learn it instead of forgetting it. âI did the same thing when she tried to teach me how to use an axe. She knew! She knew all this time and didnât say anything about it. God! I shouldâve done something to help her sooner.â
âYou canât change the past.â
âI fucking know that.â She was indebted to you. For keeping her secret, for trusting her, for protecting her. Always. âI just wish I could tell her how much she means to me.â
âThere are so many things left unsaid. But wherever my sister is, I think sheâll know.â

johanna mason, whose preferred love language is being an asshole. (affectionately)
johanna mason, whose walls always remain up after her two experiences in the arena, but somehow crumble involuntarily when she's around you.
johanna mason, who lets you touch up the cherry red streaks in her hair, standing between your legs while you sit on the countertop, face cradled in your hands as you coat every strand of hers with the color.
johanna mason, whose eyes flicker from sharp and piercing to ever so soft as her gaze lands on you.
johanna mason, who talks of future plans with you during the games should she not survive the quarter quell, dreaming of the house you would have bought and the life you would have shared if it weren't for the corruption of the capitol.
johanna mason, who teaches you how to wield an axe, her scarred hands cradling yours as she guides you through the motions.
johanna mason, who tends a nasty gash on your arm after your attempt at wielding said axe.
johanna mason, who scolds you for attempting to use her axe and mocks your 'stupidity', as if she hadn't been totally terrified just seconds earlier.
johanna mason, who's the black cat to your golden retriever.
johanna mason, who lets you call her by all the cheesy nicknames you wishânicknames that she would rather die than hear come from anyone else's mouth. johanna mason, who feigns disapproval of such affectionate names, but you can see the slight upturn of her lips whenever you address her by one.
johanna mason, who is constantly afraid of you leaving her, due to her snappy and impatient personality that she uses as a defense mechanism to cover up the vulnerability and trauma that lies underneath. johanna mason, who has never let you know about her insecurities, but maybe she'll let it slip as the years go by.
johanna mason, who's a total winter bug and immediately clings to you the second the temperature drops. latching onto your leg and gazing up at you with red, puffy eyes and a runny nose as she suffers through the flu, begging for you to stay with her when you try to go brew her some tea.
johanna mason, who smiles a lot more when you're around. and not her usual cynical 'i'm lowkey judging you' smile, but a quirk-lipped smirk that appears every time you enter the room.
johanna mason, who wakes up thrashing and trembling in the middle of the night, as the nightmares of her time in the capitol continue to haunt her even after she escaped. she either clings onto you for dear life, needing to feel your touch, or pushes you away completely, struggling to come to grips with her reality.
johanna mason, who holds you firmly against her when you both go back to sleep, her eyes unblinking for the first few hours because she needs the reassurance that she isn't dreaming and that you won't leave her.
johanna mason, who whispers to you in your sleep, telling you how much you mean to her because there's no way she can be this soft when you're awake.
in conclusion, johanna mason. that's it.

Home Again
Does anyone even read Hunger Games fanfics anymore?? I don't know, and I don't really care! I recently reread the series to get out of a reading slump, and now I'm hyperfixating again so... you guys get this which will probably turn into a multipart series because I FEEL LIKE IT, OKAY? Tl;dr: I'll do what I want.
Johanna Mason x fem!reader Warnings: Massive HUGE warnings for violence, blood, murder, etc., but also an especially HUGE warning for sexual assault, trauma in general, explicit language (let me know if I've missed anything) Word count: 2.5k
Summary: You're freshly home from winning the 73rd Hunger Games, and all you really want is for things to go back to normal for you and your brother. But now you're in the Victor's Village. And now Johanna Mason, who won the year before you, is your neighbor.
Itâs not that you didnât like the house in the Victorâs Village. It was objectively better than the cabin you and Leevee had lived in before. But at the cabin, youâd had neighbors. People who knew you, who looked after you and Leevee after the fever took your parents, even though you insisted you work in exchange for every loaf of bread, every mended pair of pants.
You took care of him as best you could, after your parents died. You dropped out of school and went to work in the lumber yards. Leevee went to school, of course, but his teachers didnât teach him much of anything. There was something different about him, a bit off. Always had been, since he was born. The people in Seven called him slow, and maybe he was in some ways, but he was also kind and bighearted and quick to laugh and full of joyâtraits hard-pressed to come by in a place like this. So everyone took to him and everyone looked out for him. They had a name for his affliction in the Capitol. But you didnât like them naming something wrong with Leevee, as if what made him different was all there was to him. So you paid it no mind. To you, he was just your Leevee. Perfect just like he was.
It was hard to believe it'd only been three weeks since the Reaping. When your name had been called, you kept your eyes lasered in on the branches of a pine tree in the distance. You could hear Leevee calling your name from the crowd, confused about why you were on stage, and your heart felt like it was being pulled apart. But you would not cry. You wouldnât let these Capitol people see you cry. It was not for them to see.
Your neighbor, Otta, a widow, had brought Leevee to see you before you had to leave. Only then did you let yourself cry and, even then, he hadnât understood. Heâd taken his handkerchief out of his pocket and pressed it to your face, and you told him to listen to Otta and the neighbors. That you were going away and you might not be back for a while, but that you loved him very much. Listen to Otta, you said. Keep those listening ears on, young man. And then he was gone. Or, rather, you were.
Before the Games, you hadnât fancied your chances at winning. Sure, you were strong and, at eighteen, one of the oldest tributes. But you were very small, barely five feet tall, lithe and wiry. You could handle a saw and an ax fairly well from your time in the lumber yard, but you couldnât imagine sawing through someone. You couldnât imagine killing someone at all. Even worse was the thought of Leevee watching you kill someone or watching you die. You hoped Otta would cover his eyes.
The arena was the only thing in your favor during the 73rd Hunger Games. A coastal ecosystem. Not rainforest, like parts of Seven, but tall, spindly pines that bent in the wind. It wasnât exactly like home, but you were nothing if not comfortable around trees. Your saving grace in the Games turned out to be your size. The trees were impossible but all for the smallest of the tributesâyou and the youngestâto climb. The first night you spent in one of those pines, you thought you might crash to your death from all the swaying, but once you acclimated, it was like the tree was rocking you. It would have been nice if not for the cannons in the air, if not for the constant terror.
You managed to find plants to eat, to catch fish in the small river that trickled into the artificial ocean. Your Games lasted six days, and you spent most of it in the trees.
That last night⊠You knew youâd have to kill him. The Career from One. But he was so bigâa full foot and a half taller than you and stocky to bootâand vicious. You didnât even have a real weapon, just some river rocks and a bit of your shirt youâd been using as a sling. But Oneâyou didnât even like to hear his name now, didnât like to remember itâheâd found the superior weapon. Youâd woken up to your tree shaking, to the tell-tale crackling and groaning of a trunk in distress. One had an ax, and the trees here were so spindly, itâd be a matter of minutes before it toppled, especially with your weight at the top. You tried to scramble down far enough that when the tree fell, you wouldnât die from it, but you still had a long way to go when the trunk cracked.
It was the landing that did you in. You hit the ground so hard it knocked your breath out. Knocked your brain pretty good, too, based on how blurry everything was afterward. You couldnât move, couldnât breathe for a few seconds, and that few seconds was all One needed. He was on top of you, and the weight of him made it even harder to catch your breath. You were faintly aware of your body fighting back, but it was like fighting back against a mountain. You screamed when he stabbed long hunting knives into either of your forearms, all the way through, pinning you to the ground, and almost passed out from the pain. This was it. This was how you'd die. Youâd like to say you thought of Leevee, but all you thought of was how scared you were.
But⊠he wasnât killing you. He wasnât getting another weapon. He was⊠undressing? And suddenly you remembered that there were things worse than death. You screamed and screamed until your throat gave out. You didnât care who saw you cry now, couldnât have stopped the tears if youâd wanted to. People didnât do this in the Games. They murdered each other. They hurt each other. They tore one another to bits. But they didnât do this. Surely, the Capitol wouldnât let this happen, wouldnât let this air on TV. There was a line, surely. But as soon as you thought it, the hope left your body deflated and empty except for the manâthe boy, mere months older than youâgrunting above you. There was no line. Not where the Capitol was involved.
But somewhere in your pain-addled brain, you realized that he was⊠occupied, which meant he wasnât keeping a close enough eye on his weapons. You screamed as you wrenched one of your arms out of the ground and pulled the knife from your other wrist. There was a moment, right at the last second, where he looked up and understood what you were doing, but it was too late by then. The last thing you remembered from the arena was plunging the knife into his neck.
When they made you watch the replay of your âvictory,â youâd hardly recognized yourself. Covered in blood, lips curled up in a snarl, as if you were an animal. You hadnât stopped at his neck. Youâd stabbed him over and over and over. Youâd stabbed his genitals so many times there was nothing left but a mangled, bloody mess. And then youâd passed out.
And, to be frank, you could never bring yourself to feel any remorse over it. For the others youâd killed, the ones whoâd happened by your perch over the river, and died quickly from a stone to the templeâyou felt awful. It tore you apart. But One? For what he had done to you, he deserved every moment of his gruesome, painful death.
Now that you were back in Seven, back with Leevee, and moved into the Victorâs Village, you knew that it would never be the same. Not with the people that knew you before. Everyone looked at you like a wounded animal, like someone to be pitied. The assault had traumatized the entire nation. Even the Capitol viewers had so disliked the âassault narrative,â that the Games Committee had put forth a blanket statement that, in the future, sexual violence would be met with a swift and immediate death. One of your old neighbors told you that you should feel proud that you made a difference in the future games, protecting future tributes. Youâd gone home and vomited, as you did every night after you woke up screaming, sweating, feeling the weight of One on top of you.
Your solace these days was Leevee. You were struggling to get used to the isolation of the Victorâs Village, even though your tendency now was to isolate yourself anyway. He was so happy to have you back. He didnât really understand where youâd gone. Otta and the others had told him you were âcamping,â and thatâs where you were when he saw you on the screens.
You didnât need to work in the lumber yard anymore, so you spent long days with Leevee. Now that you had time, you were teaching him things that the instructors at school didnât bother with, like how to read. And youâd left school so early to take care of him that you had learning to do, too. There wasnât much of a library to speak of, in Seven, but oddly enough your house at the Victorâs Village had come stocked with books, and you were making your way through all of them.
Your favorite part of the day was your afternoon walk with Leevee. Long and leisurely. You spent a lot of time at the fountain in the center of the Victorâs houses. You gave him stones to throw in and fished them out, barefoot in the water. You had the fountain and the Village pretty much to yourself. Just Blight, who kept to himself, and Johanna, whoâd won two years ago. You had known Johanna a little, at school, but you'd never spoken much, just in passing. Youâd dropped out so early, there hadnât been much time for friends.
Johanna seemed to have built some kind of improvised woodshop outside of her house, and she was out there quite a bit, but you never approached her. She didnât seem like the kind of person who took kindly to strangers, especially since her Games, two years before yours. Sheâd been belligerent and hostile in the Capitol and, in retaliation, theyâd killed her family. Officially, of course, theyâd died of the fever. Unofficially, Snowâs roses, left on each of their deathbeds for Johanna to find when sheâd returned from a day in the forest, were warning enough.
But you noticed her watching you on your walks with Leevee, when you played with him at the fountain. Felt her eyes on you and tried to ignore them. They were like everyone elseâsâfull of pity. And you were so tired of being pitied. Yes, it had been awful. Yes, there were nights that you jerked awake and wished One had just killed you instead of leaving you like this. But then who would Leevee have? He needed you.
One day, when you and Leevee walked past Johanna's house on the way to the fountain, you found her sitting on her porch steps, staring as usual. Her eyes were hard and direct, and you found it hard to meet them. You were tired of this. So tired.
âLeevee, go ahead to the fountain, young man. Iâll be there in a minute.â
Leevee happily ran ahead, and you whipped your head around to face Johanna, pulling yourself into as imposing a figure as you could manage in your tiny frame. Which, given that you had stabbed a man to death, was maybe more than you could hope for otherwise.Â
You glared at her, finally meeting her cool eyes. âStop looking at me like that,â you spat, your voice steady and sharp.
Johanna looked almost⊠amused? She stood and walked toward you, smirking. âLike what, half-pint?â
You hadnât really expected her to engage with you at all, and you were losing confidence quickly. Johanna was taller than you, more confident than you, cooler than you, tougher than you, prettier than you. You stopped yourself. Prettier? Who cares about prettier?!
âLike you feel sorry for me! Look at me like an animal or a fucking murderer, I donât care. JustâŠâ You deflated slightly, shifting your eyes to the ground. âDonât look at me like that.â
Johanna was quiet for a moment, as if she was sizing you up. You wished you could tell what she was thinking. You wanted Johanna to like you or at least tolerate you but, then, did Johanna actually like anybody?
âOkay,â she said and shrugged. You couldnât quite believe it. Would it really be that easy? âIâll look at you like you are.â
âLike I am?â
âMmhm.â
You waited for her to elaborate, but she never did, instead turning and walking back toward her porch. You shook your head and went to meet Leevee by the fountain. You hoped you hadnât fucked it up. Was this Johannaâs version of friendly? You werenât really sure. You got the feeling youâd know if she didnât like you.
âHey, Y/N!â
You stopped and looked behind you to find Johanna trotting up, holding something in her hands. She handed you the objectâa small sailboat carved out of wood. You looked at the boatâso smooth, so beautifully craftedâand then at Johanna, confused.
âFor your brother,â she explained. âTo use in the fountain. Itâs made of cedar, so itâll float.â
You were stunned speechless, watching Johanna, who kept her eyes on some fixed point in the distance and wrung her hands as if she were⊠nervous? Johanna, nervous? And suddenly, she didnât seem so intimidating to you, this girl whoâd orchestrated a bloodbath to win the Games. Whoâd been so filled with rage and hurt by the part sheâd been forced to play, only to have everyone she loved taken from her. She wasnât scary at all, you realized. Not really. She was like you. She was a scared, angry girl whoâd done what she had to do to survive.
âAnyway,â she said, eager for the moment to end. âSee you never, shortstuff.â She hurried back toward her house, but you yelled after her.
âHey, Johanna! You could go on a walk with us sometime. You know, if you wanted.â
âWhy would I want to hang out with you!?â she called without turning back.
You grinned. So Johanna might take a little work. That was okay. You had time. You had nothing but time now.
You approached Leevee, who was finding nearby sticks to throw in the fountain.
âHey, young man,â you said, beckoning him over. âLook at this! Johanna made it for you!â
And, oh, you wished she could have seen his eyes light up. You had a hunch that she was still watching, from her window or her woodshop or wherever sheâd planted herself. Leevee could melt anyoneâs heart, even yours. Maybe even hers.
